Beschreibung

While traditionally metaphor has been thought of as a purely ornamental aspect of language, more recent metaphor research emphasizes that metaphor is a fundamental scheme by which people conceptualize the world. A growing body of work from different academic disciplines demonstrates the ubiquity of metaphor in everyday language (and thought, as some claim) but also in more specialized scientific jargon. In light of this, some fear that the epistemic integrity of science itself is jeopardised, but is it necessarily so? Meanwhile, the popular and much less controversial claim that metaphors are embodied is also not without problems. For one, the actual meaning of metaphor embodiment remains rather vague. Apart from this, psychotherapy as well as phenomenological-existential studies suggest that metaphors capture implicit affective content of our experience. And yet, the affective dimension of metaphor is still understudied and hardly reflected in contemporary theory. In this course, we shall address these and other questions and concerns about metaphor, both trotting along the traditional lines of inquiry and stepping into the yet-unexplored.

Course language is English.
