Foundations of Logic and Argumentation Theory

Dozenten

Beschreibung

This lecture is an introduction to argumentation theory and the foundations of standard propositional and standard first order predicate logic.
Its goal is to enable you to distinguish good arguments from bad arguments. Thus, the following two questions are central: What makes for a good argument? How can we identify, reconstruct and evaluate arguments?
In a good argument the conclusion follows from the premises. But if the argument is too complex it may be of help to ignore the content and to concentrate on the form of the argument in order to establish whether the conclusion does indeed follow from the premises. At this point logic comes into play. How so? Come and see!

Audio-commented powerpoint presentations will be uploaded every Thursday on Stud.IP (open cast) at around 02.00 p.m. There will be no in-person meetings this semester. For further details see the first lecture on October 29th.

This lecture is worth 6 ECTS points. You will get them if (and only if) you pass the final exam or the re-sit exam. (Final exam: Thursday, February 11th 2021) If you fail or miss the final exam, there will be a re-sit (make-up) exam. (Re-sit exam: Thursday, March 25th 2021)
