Ancient Science (LAT-AW-K2). Veranstaltung in englischer Sprache
Science as we know it today is a fairly recent human project. This should however not lead us to think that the ancients did not attempt to build, accumulate, and classify knowledge about the natural world in bodies of knowledge partly analogous to our astronomy, medicine, mathematics, physics, biology, or engineering. But how were these projects? What expectations and aims did their promoters have, and what was their status in their societies? Was their notion of nature the same as ours? Was it even a unified notion? We will focus on Mesopotamia and the ancientGreek and Roman worlds, discussing a selection of practices through primary sources in translation and up-to-date analyses by leading historians of science. As we will see, even if we can detect the embryo of the modernnotion of nature and science in some of these developments, crucial aspects such as the aims, the boundaries between disciplines, and the methods were not only radically different from ours, but also varying across cultures, traditions, or individuals.
The discussion is intended to take place in English, which is the language of the course materials. No knowledge of ancient languages is assumed, although, of course, that can be an asset. Course materials will be uploaded in due time in StudIP (no purchase of a textbook required).
